Marvel Studios’ newest series, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier starring Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson/The Falcon, and Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes/The Winter Soldier follows the two much-loved characters in dealing with the fallout of Avengers: Endgame. Bucky and Sam are an unlikely duo already known to dislike each other, who were brought together towards the end of phase three in Endgame. Now they team up over six episodes to take on a global adventure seemingly built to test their ability and their patience!
"A few months ago, billions of people reappeared after five years away...We need new heroes. Ones suited for the times we’re in."
Episode one of Marvel Studios' The Falcon and The Winter Soldier was released on March 19th on Disney+ and if you haven't seen it yet this is your warning to stop reading!
Titled New World Order, the first episode has a run time of 50 minutes and gives us a look at what WandaVision didn't - the reality of life after the events of Endgame. We're given an introduction to the harsh reality of what it was like for people on both sides of the blip which immediately makes the world of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier more three dimensional and really draws in the interest of the audience straight away. While nothing exceptionally violent happens to our main stars over the course of the episode, we are treated to an extended action sequence right at the beginning.
Debuting the new wings, Falcon's (Anthony Mackie) sequence fulfils the need that's been there since Spiderman: Far From Home was released in the summer of 2019, the need for a good old-fashioned fight scene. Bringing the show in with a statement, the scene also allows us to be introduced to a new character, Joaquin Torres (Danny Ramierz). Torres brings both comedy and a serious addition to the show and we can only hope we'll see more of him in future episodes!

The serious side of the show starts to be revealed both with Sam dealing with the aftermath of the blip back home in Louisiana, and in the footage we see of Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan). As the former Winter Soldier, taken by Hydra back in the 1940s, James Buchanan Barnes has jumped from one fight to another for ninety years. With only a small respite in Wakanda prior to the events of Avengers: Infinity War, the life of violence has taken its toll and we see some of his efforts to deal with it. Episode one makes it clear that Bucky doesn't know how to live a normal life anymore, which is comparable to the belief that Steve Rogers can't live without a war.
While we haven't yet seen Sam and Bucky together, the wait only increases the excitement for when that moment finally happens. Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan have been responsible for a serious amount of press tour hilarity over the years and the chemistry between them is only going to make this show more entertaining when we see their relationship transpire into Sam and Bucky. It will definitely be interesting to see the rivalry between these two characters and how they can manage to work together for long enough to take down a criminal syndicate and help to bring peace back to the world.
The miniseries is off to a great start so far, and I can already tell that waiting a whole week for a new episode is only going to increase the hype surrounding the show. If you haven't already, check out New World Order now available on Disney+ and if you're new to the MCU, make sure to take a look at the stories behind the two main characters!
"I am no longer the Winter Soldier. I am James Bucky Barnes. And you’re part of my efforts to make amends."
