Vancouver based Nate Adamson released his debut single back in September. Taking inspiration from legends like Johnny Cash and later Kings of Leon the single was influenced by a lifetime of music. The track was written, produced and recorded solely by Nate, demonstrating the versatility of his talent with production and many different instruments including bass, piano, guitar and of course vocals. Recorded in his own hand-built studio, the precision of the single shows the complete control Nate has made the most of when producing it.
Released on September 18th, the single is titled Grace and has clear references to its inspiration while still sounding totally original. A calm, laid-back opening to the song sets the tone and gives off some amazing singer-songwriter vibes. Both the rhythm and the melody are easy to pick up and have you humming along before the vocals even come in. When they do however, the guitar manages to still be a prominent part of the track without overpowering Nate’s voice; it’s both in the foreground and background at the same time which I’d say is a huge achievement.
When vocals are introduced, the strength of Nate’s voice really comes across. The new dimension that this adds to the track really proves how well the voice is suited to the song and the genre. Giving off some strong Bradley Cooper vibes, the whole track creates an incredible atmosphere and the listener is totally and completely absorbed in it. To achieve something like that in a debut single is really an achievement and further demonstrates the talent Nate has for writing and producing music.
Listening again after knowing that every single part of the track was recorded and produced by Nate, it’s impossible not to appreciate how well written the song is and how every element fits together. Guitars and vocals are especially noticeable in how they compliment each other, but the rest of the backing really creates a strong base for the song. Continuity in the melody means that the slight changes there are don't stick out but instead build on the foundation of the song and add more depth to it.
Four minutes in, the pace relaxes more, providing an opportunity for Nate to further demonstrate his talents. This wasn't an opportunity that was wasted either, the vocalising and the change of pace really add to the character and feeling of the song. The gradual fade out at the end of the track is a really effective way of ending the song without straying from its core sound and still leaving the listener excited to hear more. Grace as a debut single is a really strong start to what I’m sure will be an amazing collection of music!
